Democrats versus democracy

I don't know if Burris himself is corrupt or not (beyond the norm for
politicians), nor do I know if his campaign work for Blagojevich is now
being paid off.

What bothers me more is that the Illinois Senate did not call a special
election. There is some debate over this, but as I understand it, they
had it in their authority to do so. Isn't it liberals who cry all of
the time about every disenfranchised vote (especially Florida 2000)?
But now, they disenfranchised a whole state, and not on some dubious
procedural reason, but as an intentional effort to guarantee a Democrat
gets the senate seat. The mere thought that a Republican might win
(e.g. [1]) an election was sufficient for them to accept an appointment
from a blatantly corrupt governor over an election.

It reminds me of prop 77 in California [2]. It would have dropped a
political redistricting process and replaced it by a more neutral one.
Democrats were strongly opposed (in exit polls) on the theory that it
might lead to fewer Democrats.

Yes, the Republicans are just as bad. But the charge of hypocrisy
sticks more firmly to Democrats as they demagogue the issue more. The
next time a Democrat whines about the homeless, etc., voting, you know
they are lying about their true intentions.
