Democratic majority kicks in

It didn't take long for the damage from single-party rule to begin:

> President Obama won his first legislative victory as the House passed
> a $819 billion economic stimulus package Wednesday night, but his bid
> to woo Republicans failed to convince even a single GOP member to join
> Democrats to back the bill.

The Democrats believe they have a free hand to pass every bit of regulation and welfare they have wanted for years. Single-party rule lets them steamroll the opposition and the mortgage crisis is the excuse for them to create programs that will last much longer.

I have to laugh at the article headline too: "House passes Stimulus without GOP help". How presumptuous. It just assumes that the bill is a good one and voting for it is "help", not to mention that assuming it actually is "stimulus", just because Democrats call it that. Also, there is a sleight of hand in referring to the "House" as a whole, when it's the Democrats, but then the Republicans in particular as the opposition. How about turning it all around: "House effort to block expensive, long-term entitlement increase overridden by Democrats."

I've had to listen for 6 years or so that the Iraq War was a bad idea because it was too expensive. This single "stimulus" package alone (even before the repeating costs) is almost the total (direct) cost of the Iraq War over all of its years. Last year's TARP was too. I'm not defending the Iraq War, only saying there is a hypocrisy here.
