Like any government project, once decisions are based on political influence
instead of product quality, people will invest in buying legislators instead
of improving product (or improving their own consumption pattern).

Just today I learned that the Democrats in the House are raising the cost of
non-union health care to pay for union insurance:

> Health plans covered by union contracts would not be subject to the 40
percent tax until 2018 -- a transition period union leaders said is
comparable to those offered to other private insurers. The threshold for
taxing other plans will be adjusted by 1 percent above the annual rate of
inflation, and plans involving large numbers of women or the elderly will
get breaks as well, Trumka said. [1]

Level-playing field anyone? Instead of sliding-scale vouchers to cover the
poor and uninsured, the government cannot resist the temptation of gaining
more power over your life and then selling it back to you for campaign
contributions.
