Tuesday, on a call in radio show, Sheriff Klevenhagen was asked
about a lawsuit filed by black deputies claiming unfair hiring
practices. Klevenhagen responded [quoting the Post which
paraphrased] "that more blacks are not hired and
promoted in his department because of their poor achievement in school."
The AASDL (a black group) said the remarks were "an indictment of the
whole black community." Klevenhagen's opponent in the race, Paul Day,
said "Klevenhagen's a racist."
Is Klevenhagen right or not? In this particular case, I don't know.
If he is right, he is being vilified for telling the truth. If he is
wrong, why don't his opponents just tell us the stats? I suspect that
he is right and his opponents want it to not matter but they won't dare
say that.
At the end of the article it also says that the AASDL never asked
for lower standards for blacks. But, they still want more blacks hired.
Unfortunately, the ever useless Post, doesn't say exactly what is
being claimed in the lawsuit. It might be they are just out to show
prejudicial discrimination and get it corrected. However, I wouldn't
be surprised to learn they are trying to embody the same contradiction
the federal civil rights restoration act does, you cannot discriminate
but neither can you use quotas to avoid it. Here the AASDL
wants (possibly) more black officers thus implicitly lowering the
standards and at the same time says they are not for lowering standards.
I'm sure they are against quotas too even though they want X more black
officers.
