malnutrition stats

For amusement I tried to look up some historical stats. I would
have been very useful to compare '60 to '90. Ufortunately, malnutrition
data only goes back to 1970. The death rate was 1.2 then also. I even
glanced at some other books. I noticed one that mentioned old data
was subjective and difficult to come by (that did not keep them from
finding a crisis though!).
One tidbit, in 1960, only 50K people got food stamps. Today it
is over 20M. Do you honestly believe that far fewer people are starving
today than in 1960 (especially considering GNP growth in that period)?
