food labelling & Pepsi freshness dating

As most of you know, I'm against food labelling laws because the free market
already provides exactly the information people want. Extra 'information'
simply goes unread and the space which had other uses (mostly advertising)
goes inefficiently utilized.

Anyway, just this week, Pepsi announced that all of its products will be
freshness dated (in a readable way). They did this because, are you ready
for this stunning revelation?, consumers wanted it. This goes beyond
nutrition labelling because some product will go unsold causing the price of
the rest to rise some amount. But, this is just the kind of information
that people wanted and the market provided it.
